This course is intended to instruct the professional basic theory and assessment of neuromuscular conditions followed by an extensive overview of techniques specific to deep tissue massage.
Professional Objectives:
At the end of this course the professional will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the kinesiology and pathology involved in musculoskeletal pain and identify nine benefits of deep tissue massage.
- list the steps involved in postural, gait & functional assessments to identify common postural distortions and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of documentation.
- define the seven basic massage strokes and identify characteristics of four modalities that influence deep tissue massage.
- list five key principles of deep tissue massage and determine utilization of upper extremities & massage tools for deep tissue massage.
- demonstrate knowledge of structural anatomy of the cervical region and the effects of different body positions on the head and the neck.
- differentiate between types of headaches and employ knowledge of contraindications and massage techniques to plan a treatment sequence for headaches.
- list the steps in treatment sequences for common cervical conditions like TMJ disorder, torticollis, whiplash, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
- demonstrate an understanding of structural anatomy of the shoulder girdle and common injuries of its joints.
- determine utilization of massage techniques in developing treatment sequences for AC joint injuries, adhesive capsulitis, and rotator cuff injuries.
- demonstrate knowledge of muscular and ligamentous design of the elbow joint and identify the steps in treatment sequences for epicondylitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
- employ knowledge of anatomy of the thoracopelvic region to identify common postural distortions.
- list massage techniques to be used in treatment sequences for hyperkyphosis and hyperlordosis.
- correlate anatomical knowledge of the hip and thigh muscles with common clinical presentations of these areas.
- demonstrate knowledge of techniques utilized on various muscle groups of the hip and thigh to address the lower crossed syndrome, patellofemoral dysfunction and iliotibial band disorder.
- differentiate between strain & sprain injuries and grade them based on severity.
- demonstrate an understanding of the causes and symptoms of shin splints & plantar fasciitis and list the sequence of techniques to be employed in the treatment of these conditions
